In the UAS Elementary School we offer the best in American education to students in grades 1 through 5 in self-contained classrooms. Our full American curriculum includes language arts (reading, writing, spelling, and grammar), mathematics, science/health, social studies, computer science, religion and Arabic language, as well as Arabic as a Foreign Language (AFL), English as a Foreign Language (ESL) and Learning Resource Center (LRC). Full counseling services are available by our elementary guidance counselor. Our specialist programs include: art, music, physical education, computers and library. Our main goal is to build and train active learners in a nurturing environment that will stimulate and challenge our students to become independent, life-long learners.
The UAS English as a Second Language program is taught by a highly qualified, certified teacher whose main purpose is to teach English language skills to students whose first language is not English. These small classes are both language and activity based with an emphasis on total physical response. Our counseling program offers support to those students who have emotional difficulties dealing with their adjustment to school life. Our elementary guidance counselor is trained and experienced in assisting students who have difficulty coping with the rigors of our highly academic program and any other school related issues.
In elementary art classes each student is actively involved in making art projects using their hands, but with a strong base in art theory. Elementary music involves singing, movement, sight-reading and performances in front of the school body for seasonal programs. The Learning Resource Center program helps students who have been identified with mild learning difficulties. We use both a pull-out program and an inclusion model to service any students who are experiencing difficulty in a specific academic area. Our Physical Education program offers students an opportunity to gain coordination, strength, endurance, knowledge of games and rules, as well as working cooperatively on a team.
UAS Elementary offers several other special programs as well. Math Olympiads is offered to those students who excel in mathematics and who desire to increase their problem solving abilities. Honors Art is offered to those students who have an artistic ability and creativity to enhance their skills and techniques in various art medium. Honors Music is a performance related group of singers and actors/actresses who excel in musical areas and who wish to be involved in various musical productions and plays. The Leadership League in the Elementary School provides an opportunity for our students to become actively involved in various activities that promote school spirit and friendship in a non-traditional organization.
Our After-School Activities Program is wide and varied, depending upon the expertise of the teaching faculty. Over the past few years we have offered fun after-school activities such as: swimming, ice skating, computers, typing, aerobics gymnastics, chess, board games, story telling, talent show, Arabic, Spanish, French, science club and many others. This special program offers students opportunities to become more well-rounded individuals and to find new ways to express themselves.
