Elementary

Career Day

Students are exposed to the World of Work through a variety of classroom guidance lessons during Career Exploration Month.  New vocabulary words are introduced and students begin to explore how their current interests and strengths are important when looking at future career possibilities

As part of the career lessons, students interview family members or family friends who have jobs they find interesting and complete the interview sheet. Those who are interviewed have the option of volunteering to be a speaker on career day. An effort is made to invite speakers who have careers in one of six different areas: Health Services; Social/Human Services; Science/Technology; Arts/Communication; Hospitality/Tourism; and Engineering/Industrial.

On Career Day, the invited speakers do four presentations to different classes of students for 25 minutes each.  Grade 1-5 classes, escorted by teachers, rotate to speakers every 25 minutes.  Speakers are provided with a sample outline and other suggestions to help them prepare for the presentation. UAS has held two annual Career Days and will hold the third in the coming spring. This past year we had 25 volunteer speakers, two more than the previous year. As a result of our Career Day speakers, students gain a better understanding of what it means to have such a career.  This benefits them now and in the future when they will begin to make their own choices regarding areas of study and careers they are interested in pursuing.
