middle school
At the Universal American School’s Middle School, students are challenged academically as well as behaviorally. Our high academic standards and college-preparatory program are intended to facilitate each student’s transition from elementary school to high school; in addition, the behavioral challenges of managing time, organizing, and working collaboratively and cooperatively with fellow students are also stressed. By the end of Grade 8, each student will be fully prepared to succeed in any high school.
The 2008-2009 school year will be a year of changes and transitions from August through June. A demanding yet streamlined schedule, a new way to select and participate in electives, and strict enforcement of consistent, school-wide behavioral guidelines are major changes for students and faculty. Our 7-period schedule contains 6 periods of required, academic subjects (Arabic, Religion, Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) as well as one of three elective choices (Band, French, or Rotation—10 solid weeks of art, instructional technology, physical education, and vocal music, on a rotating basis). The plans for 2009-2010 include the implementation of a block schedule and an emphasis on discovery learning.
Students also have the opportunity to participate in a wide-variety of intramural sports and clubs. They also have the chance to participate in several extracurricular activities as well. One of the goals for 2009-2010 is to offer more language clubs, including Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Japanese, and Russian, when qualified instructors are found.
Our Middle School also has a strong support system for students in need of extra help. The Student Support Center is open all day, counseling is available as needed, and tutoring is offered on an individual basis. If you have any questions and or would like further information, please contact the Middle School Principal (ext. 333) or Assistant Principal (ext. 301). Our professional team strives to Cause An Effect, a positive effect, in the life of each student each day.
