CURRENT NEWS AND UPDATES

26th August 2009

Dear Parent,

With the approach of winter, we also face the approach of another flu season. Last spring, a new influenza A virus called H1N1, was discovered.

While we don't know what this upcoming flu season will bring, we do want to be prepared as best we can. To that end, we are asking families to follow these simple strategies for helping to prevent the spread of H1N1 and other flu viruses.

If your child has flu-like symptoms – fever 37.8 C (100 F) or more with a cough or sore throat – keep him or her home for at least 24 hours after the child is free of fever without the use of fever-reducing medicine.

Please note: This recommendation from the Ministry of Health could change based on the severity of a potential flu wave.

Help your child stay healthy by making sure he gets enough sleep, eats well and stays hydrated.

  • Teach your child to wash his/her hands often. Washing with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is ideal.
  • Teach your children the proper use of hand sanitizer. Gels, rubs and hand wipes all work well, as long as they contain at least 60% medical alcohol. Hand washing is preferable, but sanitizer will work in the absence of soap and water.
  • Teach your children to keep their hands away from their face and avoid touching their mouth, nose or eyes.
  • Teach your children to cover coughs and sneezes with tissue or by coughing into the inside of their elbow. Cough or sneeze into your sleeve – not your hands.

Should your child become ill and is absent from school, kindly advise the staff at the school clinic.  You are welcome to contact the School Medical Clinic during school hours from 08-30 to 3pm daily to discuss any concerns.

By remaining calm and following the simple guidelines on preventing cross infection, our school year should proceed as per normal.

We shall continue to send you regular updates as we receive from the Ministry of Health Kuwait. Please note our website should be checked daily regarding this subject and other school related matters. www.uas.edu.kw/911

DIET:

Please make sure that your child has breakfast before coming to school.  For the Kindergarten children, please advise the teacher if your child has not taken their breakfast.

We request your assistance in helping us to educate the children to eat a healthier diet.  Hence; we would prefer not to see at school any sweets, candy, gum, chocolate, soft drinks or crisps, and NO NUTS
Not only do they lead to poor diet habits but also pave the way to dental decay, poor concentration, hyperactivity and obesity.

SLEEPING HOURS:

Age 3 – 5 years:    Recommended 10 – 12 hours a day.
Age 5 – 10 years:  Recommended 10 hours a day.
